Ross Hogarth Bio

Van Halen, Gov’t Mule, Roger Waters, The Black Crowes, Def Leppard, The Doobie Brothers, Edgar Winter, John Mellencamp, R.E.M.and Jewel are some of the artists this Multiple Grammy-winning producer/engineer/mixer has had the joy of working with in his over four decades in the recording studio.

Ross’ wide varied experience and taste opened up all creative doors and usual and unusual possibilities. He’s never allowed himself to be pigeonholed or trapped in any one musical genre as his studio work runs the gamut from the heavy metal insanity of Motley Crue and Coal Chamber to the Grammy-winning Keb’ Mo’ release Slow Down to recent releases by Van Halen, Grammy winning Ziggy Marley and Grammy winning Taj’Mo’.

Growing up in NY during the influential punk scene of the 70’s, Ross began his musical career as a guitarist/singer/ songwriter, playing in the wild downtown New York clubs. With good fortune paving his way to California, he had the rare opportunity to hook up with both the San Francisco Bay area’s exploding New Wave music scene and Southern Cal’s seminal rock scene. Natural evolution took him from doing live production and sound on the road with Jackson Browne, David Lindley, Fleetwood Mac and Little Feat into becoming a world class producer, mixer and recording engineer.

Hoax Productions was established in 1986 as a vehicle for Ross to have the freedom to promote and produce top names as well as newly discovered talent.

Some of his accomplishments are:
In the 90s Ross won Grammys as an engineer and mixer with Quincy Jones and Keb’ Mo’.

In 2007 Ross won the Grammy for Best Reggae Record of the Year, for his production, mix and engineering work on Ziggy Marley’s Love Is My Religion.

2012 brought the release of “A Different Kind of Truth”, the new record from Van Halen, and the first with David Lee Roth since 1984, and the first Van Halen record in 16 years, co-produced, engineered and mixed by Ross.

In 2014, his work on the highly acclaimed release of Keb’ Mo’s, Blues Americana, brought a Best Engineering Grammy nomination along with a Best Americana Grammy nomination.

2018 brought another Grammy for Best Contemporary Blues for the new TajMo record, a collaboration with Taj Mahal and Keb’ Mo’.

May 2018 saw the release of a new record with legendary iconic artist Rita Coolidge, produced /engineered and mixed by Ross.

In 2021 master songwriter James McMurtry released “The Horses and The Hounds” produced/engineered and mixed by Ross. The Horses and The Hounds garnered high critical acclaim including a place on Rolling Stone’s top 50 records of the year.

Forward to February 2023 and Ross celebrated another Grammy winning Best Contemporary Blues record of the year for producing Edgar Winter’s “Brother Johnny” a tribute to Edgar’s late brother, the great Bluesman Johnny Winter. The album, on Quarto Valley Records, features a who’s who of rock ‘n’ roll including Sir Ringo Starr.

Versatility, absolute belief in the artists’ vision and his complete commitment to bringing that vision to the final master are all representative of Ross’ strengths and abilities.

In the ever changing world of the arts, Ross and Hoax Productions’ goal is to let creativity be the place of certainty that allows for constant change.
